October 4th, 2012News Releases

The $4.1 million, 21,750-square-foot field house is a state-of-the-art athletic facility.

Dallas, Pa. (October 4, 2012) – Misericordia University dedicated its new 21,750-square-foot field house in honor of John C. Metz, chairman of the Misericordia University Board of Trustees, and his wife, Mary, during the athletic program’s Homecoming football game on Saturday, Sept. 29. Longtime supporters of the University, John and Mary Metz bestowed the leadership gift for the Pursuit for Acclamation Campaign, which funded improvements and additions to athletic facilities and residence halls on campus.

“The John and Mary Metz Field House serves as a testimony to the caring approach that Misericordia takes towards all of its students, especially student athletes,’’ said Michael A. MacDowell, president of Misericordia University. “The field house provides our Division III athletes with the highest quality training and equipment available. We are fortunate to have a chairman who cares so deeply about our students and their well-being.”

The Metz Field House, a $4.1 million state-of-the-art facility, features athletic training rooms, expanded locker facilities for men’s and women’s field sports, team meeting rooms, a weight room, shower rooms and public restrooms. A $3 million state grant helped to partially fund the new construction, which is located between Mangelsdorf Field and the newly constructed baseball diamond.

“I feel strongly that the new field house is a part of a momentous time in Misericordia history,’’ said John Metz. “It will provide support for the new football team and all the sports programs that have consistently done so well.”

Friend and NFL Hall of Famer Franco Harris accompanied John Metz for Misericordia University’s Homecoming football game against Stevenson University. Harris, an ardent supporter of Division III student-athletes, commended the new facilities and noted that they will play an integral role in the future of Misericordia’s football program, which began play this season.
